St. John Henry Newman's Passionist Connection
We join the Church’s great joy today as John Henry Cardinal Newman is canonized by Pope Francis! Beside his merit as a great man of prayer whose profound writings continue to influence Catholics today, Newman has a special place in the Passionist heart on account of his connection to one of our own brothers: Bl. Dominic Barberi, C.P. Bl. Dominic was instrumental in Newman’s reception into the Catholic Church, both through his witness and his administration of the sacraments which brought Newman into full communion with the Church. The Passionist Father General, Fr. Joachim Rego, CP, has written a wonderful reflection on the relationship between these two holy men, especially in light of the upcoming tercentenary of the Passionist Congregation’s foundation.
