Ven. Leonarda of Jesus Crucified, CP, was born in Quargnento, Italy, on July 10, 1908 to a wealthy, landed family. Given the name Angela Maria Boidi, she was the tenth daughter of Filippo Boidi and Antonia Bruno.
In 1931, Mariuccia (as her family called her) followed her sister Carla into the monastery of Passionist Nuns in Ovada, Italy. She received the name of Sister Leonarda of Jesus Crucified. Carla died of tuberculosis in 1937, at the age of 31. Leonarda was also ill at the time, and was able to live with her sister in the infirmary until her last moments.
In 1947, she was elected superior of the monastery, a position she held until her death in 1953. Her talent as an organizer made it possible to optimize community services, leaving the sisters more time to pray, and more inner tranquility to exercise fraternal charity.
Under her government, prodigious facts unfolded: during the wartime scarcities in Italy, a dried well continued to give water, and a barrel of flour did not run out! Her confidence in Divine Providence was unmeasured ... But she fell ill, and died in Alessandria on October 22, 1953, at the age of 45.
